Now, I love a good pair of rain boots and especially if they have a fun pattern or color scheme going on. With a good pair of rain boots you can splash in a puddle, walk through high water, or traipse through the rain and have dry feet when the adventure is over.
The Lord and I were chatting one rainy day and the picture of getting in the mud, in the nastiness of life, and deep down in the world of sin came to mind. We are called a family, the church, and we are called to walk life with each other which means getting in the gross-ness of life with people.
Those gross parts of life may be due to personal choices or they may be because someone made a choice for us. No matter the reason, we all need someone to walk through the dark, lonely, messy, parts of life with us.
I have found the college campus to be one of the darkest and messiest places there is. Students are making choices for the first time, they are deciding what to believe, what to enjoy, and what to do with the life they have experienced. When we walk with college students we don’t need the cute rain boots but the industrial ones! Actually, at times we just need to take the boots off and be in the mess with them.
It’s not fun to choose to be in someone else’s mess but we are called to do it. Galatians 6:2 says, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” I have to ask myself if I’m willing to take off the cute boots, put my hair in a ponytail, and jump in the mud, the muck, and the messiness of life.
