Fear and Freshmen

I was chatting with a freshman yesterday and remembering how lonely and fearful those first few days without friends and family can be. My first year began at a small Christian college in the middle of nowhere. After 3 weeks, I packed my bags and headed home. I ended that year at my third college in two semesters. I had a crazy first year of college!

Fifteen years later, I wish I had stayed at that little school for at least a semester, you know, to have accomplished what I had begun. Yet, I see how God used my leaving in mighty ways. I can understand the feelings of freshmen who are away from home and scared. Plus, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be in my current area of ministry if I had stayed which makes me see that life could be very different.

I am so thankful that God used my fear for his glory! In Romans, Paul writes “and we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose (8:28).” God has a plan and uses everything for his glory.

My words of encouragement to this freshmen included scripture, prayer, and encouragement to connect with a local church and the BCM.  May all of us remember to pray for the freshmen we know and even the ones we don’t.

These are 3 of my favorite freshmen this year!
